I have to do major body work on our 1990 Ford Econoline, I can’t afford to have it done at a body shop.
Plus it would cost more than the van is worth, so being a jack-ass of all trades and a master of none, I have to do the job myself.
I have been doing body work for years on all the old cars I have owned in the past.
I use galv. sheet metal and pop rivits and rusty metal primer.
This video is MY WAY, the poor man’s way of fixing the body rot, it has to be done, the van runs good but the body is going to hell.
Soooo…If any of you that ARE in the body shop business and want to be critic, please don’t, I do not have a garage or the equipment to do it the RIGHT way.
To do it the right way would tie up the van for weeks, we drive the van almost every day.

Hello, I’m Steve Waldren with Paramount auto body. Chances are if you’re watching this video, you may have had an accident. One of the most important decisions you’re going to have to make in this process is who’s going to fix my car? So early on, your agent is going to make a recommendation or your claims office is going to make a recommendation for you to go to an insurance referral shop. And they’ll tell you what you get out of that is you get convenience, we’ll be able to start on your car right away, you get a lifetime guarantee on it, so should you be in Timbuktu when something goes wrong, we can get it handled for you.
Well, let me explain to you want really goes on behind the scenes so you can choose wisely. Somewhere along the line the pressure has been put on to the agents in what’s to use these shops. Once your car goes into the shop, the claims office now puts pressure on the shop to perform at a level in different areas. Some of those areas are aftermarket imitation and used parts.
So usually, the general rule of thumb on that is you have to have 40% of the jobs that go through the shop have to have aftermarket or used parts on. So in order to accomplish that, you have to put those parts usually in structural areas that aren’t going to hold up the same should you have another accident, or they’re going to put them into cosmetic areas, and the general which aren’t going to line up the same. And the general rule of thumb on that is that as you, the customer, goes to pick it up at the body shop, if you can find out that it doesn’t look right, well then, we’ll do something about it. So the shops are generally instructed, “Hey, if there’s a problem with that, let the customer pick it out.”
Some of the other quote is that they have is repair versus replace. So which means that now you have to repair things set by manufacturer’s standard should be replaced on it. Another standard you have is days to repair. You only have so many days to repair this vehicle or the shop is going to end up paying for the rental car. Well, you can find out real quick that once a shop has to reach into its rental car, how many corners are going to start to be cut to be able to repair your vehicle.

Ford used the 5R55E in many rear and 4 wheel Drive applications. It is a good transmission but is susceptible to the valve body gasket “blowing out.” The symptom of this in our vehicle was that the transmission missed second gear under acceleration but found a higher gear when we let off the gas pedal. This is an easy problem to diagnose and only requires basic tools. Pull your transmission pan down, remove your valve body and see if either the gasket between the plate and transmission is damaged (as on our Explorer) or the gasket between the plate and valve body is damaged. If they are then you have an inexpensive rewarding fix. If they aren’t you can put your transmission together and know you may have a more expensive problem. This transmission was used in Ford Aerostar, Ranger, Explorer, Thunderbird, Mustang Mazda B-Series pickup, Mercury Mountaineer, Lincoln LS and Jaquar S-Type. This problem is more common to the mid to late 90s models. Torque specifications for the valve body to transmission bolts are 6-8 foot lbs or 70-90 Inch lbs. The bolts that hold the transmission pan on are 10 foot lbs.
