Which automotive repair scan tool to buy?

I’m looking to buy a new or used automotive scan tool (not a code reader). I currently have AUTOTAP which is a fairly nice OBD-II PC based scanner but it is unidirectional (read only). I’m prepared to spend up to $3K for a bidirectional scan tool that will cover all OBD-II models- doesn’t have to cover OBD-I but would be nice.
The problem is I’m having a hella-hard time finding information, reviews, etc on all the choices. Should I buy a MAC Mentor or a Nemesys? Why or why not?

In advance, I’d like to try and filter out as many MORONS and IDIOTS as possible because it seems this website is absolutely filled to capacity with people who have no idea what they are talking about. If you aren’t an auto tech, if you have never used a scan tool, are 16yrs old, or if your dad works at dealer then MOVE ON and let someone who actually knows what they are talking about answer the question.
Any personal recommendations supported by links to more information would be great.

is there a difference or not any at all? and what is better who gets paid more, i no for a fact alot of auto mechanics work alot and are underpaid, whos more likely to get a job with good salary etc. plz help me with this question

An auto technician knows what there doing and can do it all and professionally.
A mechanic can install brakes and water pumps and leave greasy thumb prints on the dashboard.

A technician can update a vehicles computer system with a lap-top and know how it works and why.
A mechanic can almost put the spare tire back in your car the way it came from the factory.

A technician "fixes" your problem.
A mechanic get’s you by for $50 bucks.

A technician go’s in and researches the problem and finds it then fixes it right and knows where the fix took place and how they found it.
A mechanic merely suggest’s trying a fuel filter…..every time.

A technician only works for people who also take pride in there work and offers an honest professional business.
A mechanic takes bribes for illegal inspections and cut’s there boss in on it.

A grease monkey will always give a thumbs down.

my car is black and rather old. i want an overall paint job just to make it look much better. i don’t need anything too pricey or extravagant…just something too put the spark back in the car (:

You pay for what you get. Go cheap, get a cheap paint job.

Pay quality, get quality.

Paint isn’t cheap, and labor is expensive. So how much of either do you think you can get for a few hundred dollars?

You could go Maaco or Schrieb, but expect the paint to peel off within a year. My exwife did the same thing you’re looking to do, and after a year, the car was worse than it was when she started.

Save up, take the car to the dealer (if they have a painting department), and have them professionally do it. Cost you up to a few thousand dollars, but it will have a dealer warranty, a factory color, and be done right.

You want to become an "Affiliate" . Look up Automotive Parts
and Accessories Affiliate, this would lead you to some.

Also if you find a parts company or Accessories company you want
to sell, go to the companies website look at the bottom of the site
and see if the word "affiliate" shows, if so go to this. If not email
them and ask them how you can be an affiliate.

How difficult is auto body work for the mechanically challenged?

I have several dents in my Ford Ranger pick-up on the bed and on the front fender where I had a fenderbender. The truck runs well, but it couldn’t get much uglier. I figured this might be a good auto maintenence project as I don’t have the money to get a pro to do it. I am not the most handy with tools, although I can use them without hurting myself, mostly.

auto body work is an art with a little science thrown in. You are essentially massaging metal to return it to its original shape. A dent is nothing more than stretched metal and it’s not easy to get it back to what it originally looked like. A body technician uses a variety of tools to beat the metal into submission, and applies heat and cold to work it into a usable shape. It’s not easy work, sometime very tedious, and physically demanding. I would give you an "A" for effort if you tried to fix your truck on your own but you could end up making it worse. Good luck.
