I’m looking to buy a new or used automotive scan tool (not a code reader). I currently have AUTOTAP which is a fairly nice OBD-II PC based scanner but it is unidirectional (read only). I’m prepared to spend up to $3K for a bidirectional scan tool that will cover all OBD-II models- doesn’t have to cover OBD-I but would be nice.
The problem is I’m having a hella-hard time finding information, reviews, etc on all the choices. Should I buy a MAC Mentor or a Nemesys? Why or why not?
Thanks. In advance, I’d like to try and filter out as many MORONS and IDIOTS as possible because it seems this website is absolutely filled to capacity with people who have no idea what they are talking about. If you aren’t an auto tech, if you have never used a scan tool, are 16yrs old, or if your dad works at dealer then MOVE ON and let someone who actually knows what they are talking about answer the question.
Any personal recommendations supported by links to more information would be great.
Bobweb, you idiot, didn’t I JUST SAY that I wanted a BIDIRECTIONAL SCAN TOOL??? Autoxray is unidirectional.
Gosh. Idiots. This is EXACTLY why I only want people who know what they are talking about to answer.
Idiots.
Gosh.

While I’m sure travel expenses are factored into labor / other costs in the final bill, would it be necessary to tip an automotive glass repair service that comes to the house?
Places I tip for sure include haircut, restaurant/bar service, valet service and I’ve even tipped a tow truck driver $5 for that extra insurance that my car is taken care of behind the scenes. This is a serivce I’m not entirely sure of how appropriate a tip, (if any) might be.
No. He absolutely can charge for his travel time, and most of them travel to you nowadays. Some of even own their own businesses or are contractors, so a tip would be unnecessary.

I just wanna know what book will give me the best information that I would need. I know that hand on training is the best way to learn but i’m just looking for a book title.
It all depends on what you are working on. Haynes repair manuals are what I use they are vehicle specific. You can find them at most auto parts stores.

im currently a Ford technician and i plan to own my own business. what would i need to start my own shop. What education, experience, and anything else?
Education : Although I’ve heard of auto-techs who have auto-engineering certifications, most have just learnt through years of experience on the job. However, getting certified for specific technical specialties in automotive repair may be a requirement in your state – for example : certification for handling hazardous gasses etc.
Experience : Definitely THE critical aspect of your business. For example, you can learn about changing a thermostat in a Ford Explorer, but what makes the difference is actually getting your hands on one and doing it! I think you should ask yourself this : if someone called you and asked you to help fix their car (not knowing WHAT kind of car it is), would you be confident of knowing what to do?
Anything else : Lots. Setting up a business involves a lot of nitty gritty. Try this page for a start :

I wish you all the best. We need MORE honest, reliable auto-techs in the world!

We have typically put it up for our customers to give suggestions. If one of the customer’s suggestion is picked they get a free oil change and tire rotation. I am wanting some of your opinion’s on this also. We are again doing this for our customer’s but would like more input this go around. Thanks for your suggestions in advance!
Free computer scan.
I can think of nothing else that might generate as much customer traffic – and possibly a good deal of work in the process.

maybe & maybe not… as it relates to auto repair shop at home
In the county where I live you are allowed to do so with the proper permits
however, in most cities within the county, they do not allow certain businesses to be operated at home.. one of those that are not allowed is auto repair —- can only be done in areas zoned for commercial/business
small business… technically.. yes
Talk with your city & your county business licence folks to find out what you need to do

Is a boat or automotive repair shop authorized to charge tax on labor in Texas? And if so where can it be found in the Texas Tax law?
Correction. Labor costs are not taxable. A complete refurb job would be. Oddly enough, labor for the installation of accessories IS taxable.
FYI, the state assesses the tax. The shop just acts as agent in collecting it for the state.
