Is auto insurance collision estimates pretty close to those at auto body shops?

The wrenches fixed hundreds of Braintree High School students’ cars.
And the saws and drills built thousands of birdhouses and spice racks.
And they will all be placed on the auction block this Saturday.
“It’s the sale of the century,” said Tom Mahar, the school department’s head custodian.
Every table saw, screwdriver and hand jack that once filled the high school’s now-closed wood and auto shops will be up for grabs at the auction.
The lots range from complete sets of socket wrenches and hand saws to a small airplane engine and hydraulic car lift.
Other items include a cabinet filled with hundreds of drill bits and saw blades, the wood shop’s remaining stock of hardwood lumber, a half-dozen full-sized wood lathes, car jacks, belt sanders and hammers.
“There were enough tools in here for 30 kids to be working at the same time,” said Peter Kress, the school department’s business manager.
And high-end tools, at that. One of the lots up for auction, for example, is a full cabinet of Snap-on brand tools.
The auction will be conducted by Strategic Auctions Inc. and is open to the public.
Mahan remembers when the industrial arts wing of Braintree High School buzzed with activity.
The sound of running motors, and the smell of fresh-cut wood would waft through the ring of classrooms behind the school auditorium.
“You could always tell when someone was using a dull blade,” said Mahar, who started his job a month after the high school opened in 1972.
But it has been more than three years since any Braintree High School student took a wood or auto shop class. The electrical shop, which has been closed for even longer than that, now houses an early childhood education program.
Braintree is one of a growing number of high schools that have shuttered their industrial arts classrooms. With school curricula being driven by high-stakes testing, focus and resources continue to shift away from electives such as wood shop.
Kress said an increasing number of Braintree students looking for a technical-based education are instead attending Blue Hills Regional Vocational High School.
During a recent tour of the shops and all their neatly arranged and tagged contents, both Kress and Mahar talked about the nostalgia that the equipment represents for thousands of Braintree High School alumni.
“There’s some really cool stuff in here,” Kress said. “It’s sad to see it go.
“But there’s no point letting this stuff sit here.”
School officials plan to convert the shops into classroom space. The auto shop, for example, is about the size of four regular classrooms.
There is also an “out with the old, in with the new” type of strategy in place, according to Kress.
School officials hope the auction will generate $40,000 to $100,000. If selectmen allow the school department to keep the proceeds — the tools are technically considered surplus town property — the money will be used to buy modern technology, such as computers, servers and routers.

then by zip code?
i dont always know who to trust, especially when i relocate somewhere else
try cartalk.com. they have a mechanic’s file for your area.
Like when they hook your car up (bmw, mercedes, audi ect..) and it runs a diagnostics and tells them what the exact problem is and what should be fixed and how.
BASICALLY I JUST NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE SOFTWARE AND EQUIPMENT IS CALLED AND WHERE TO FIND IT???
Has anyone heard of Autologic.us ? And is it anyone good?
The BIG misconception is the diagnostics tells what exactly is wrong, it shows what system area needs to be checked further or what readings the particular sensor is seeing or reacting to . eg a cut wire will make a sensor read low or hi , ie. on a throttle position it will show no input for more fuel upon acceleration but the other sensors will try to compensate and add fuel
MAC ,Snap-on or Matco tools have scanners with the appropreat moduels
I have a Bear anylizer w/3 gas which stands about 6 ft tall and about 4ft wide about $68,000 the smaller machines will do just fine for most.

I been looking everywhere around south jersey and cant really find anything. I’m looking for some custom auto body shops and all i can find is online sites that don’t even have anything worth looking at… Does anyone know and good custom auto body shops in Philly, Burlington and/or Atlantic City area?
You want to know from others who’ve had work done. Either join the Philly Angie’s List for a day and/or search yelp.com for customer reactions.
Good luck.
I was rear-ended and had to get my bumper replaced. I took it to the shop, with the insurance check in hand (roughly $1000). As the shop then dealt with the lousy driver’s insurance company, they agreed a supplemental charge would be necessary (roughly $200). Now, the work is done, but they won’t release my car until the additional $200 payment is received from the insurance company. Is this acceptable?
They claim this is company policy, but i don’t see how holding my car will ensure they get payment from an insurance company i have no affiliation with. This insurance company assures us that the check is in the mail, and I have no reason to doubt it, since they have been great to work with thus far. So it seems to me all this policy is doing is passing the risk of doing business from the business to the customer. Thanks…
Thanks for the input guys…
I ended up paying the 200 myself since i needed my car this weekend, and trust that the autobody shop will refund me when they receive the check from the other driver’s insurance. I’ve actually been very impressed with the insurance company (never thought i’d say that), and they have since provided a fedex tracking number and a faxed copy of the check. So i am cautiously optimistic, despite the feeling of being used as a risk-mitigator for this supposedly reputable (dealer) body shop.
Choosing Jorge’s answer because it’s not *my* insurance company, and it seems to me that this particular risk of being burned is inherent to their business, and they should have better methods to protect against it than just exposing the customer to it.
Thanks.
ive never heard of such a thing, i think they might be doing it it just so that if the check doesnt get there you will be forced to call the insurance. Because think about it if you have your car you wont bother to call the insurance company to get them the money but if they have your car you will be on that companys a$$ to get the money over.
thats what i think good luck though man

I currently take my car to my mechanic and it is constantly breaking down. I’m starting to question the quality of service.
Thanks.

Someone hit me and then took off. The police are too lazy to do anything about it – they didn’t even write an accident report. I am hoping that this person gets their car fixed locally.
I am wondering though, if I have the license plate number of the car, and I call up local body shops asking about this car, are they liable to cooperate? Or is it something like they usually protect their customers, etc?
I’ve never had to do detective work before -
not LIABLE per se, but they MAY cooperate. depends on the shop. Individual discretion.
