I checked on the dealer’s major tune-up package, now they just exclude many service such as brake, coolant, power steering flush service and fuel injection cleaning… I need to pick and choose to add those services myself in addition to major service. I have no idea what service is ESSENTIAL for the car or what is just for ripping off their customers.
My car is 2003 Totoya Camry with 90K mileage, with great condition and I do the oil change regularly. I don’t think I did any flush services before.
It would be great if I can get the approx price between dealer, auto shop (midas, pepboys) and private mechanics for those service.
If your coolant was never flushed from your radiator/ cooling system. Now would be a good time to have it done. A trans service and brake fluid flush is also recomended, especially the brake fluid. After a while brake fluid absorbs moisture which in turn can cause your wheel cylinders to leak on you by deteriorating the seals. each local garage has its own prices. It would be best if you just called in advance for an estimate. You can check the trans fluid by removing the dipstick. If it looks very dirty or has aburn smell to it, then you will rquire this service as well. As far as the P/S fluid, again remove the cap and check for contamination or burn smell. the cause and effect is the same with the steering portion of the car, It will deteriorate the seals and cause fluid leaks.

Is it better and cheaper to buy custom auto parts online and then take them to a custom auto shop to have them installed or should I order and have the parts installed directly through the custom auto shop?
It depends on the shop. I did that same thing with some springs, but I knew the mechanic.
Talk to the guys at the shop. They may just cut you a deal on the parts if you use them for the labor.

I crashed my car at the end of August 2005. The car was towed to an auto body shop. The car has been there up until now (June 2006). The shop has had the car for 9 months (I’m not sure what took so long to fix it). So today I finally get a call that my car is ready to be picked up. The bill was for $4950. Before any work was performed on the car, I asked how much it would be to get it fix and I was told, "Don’t worry, we’ll take care of you". I never received an estimate. I just got the invoice and was surprised.
That is not legal in any state. All repair facilities MUST have you sign a repair estimate prior to starting work. If you did not sign a repair estimate, they are going to have a hard time holding you to those charges. Also the 9 months is absurd. Be aware, the shop may have a repair estimate with "phone authorizations" on it – meaning they documented that they contacted you by phone for approval (true or not). Without knowing all the facts, I would suggest you raise your concerns to the shop and try to resolve it with them. (The $4,950 may be a fair bill for the amount of repairs. The shop may also agree to some sort of compromise for any wrongdoing on their part), If they are totally uncooperative, consult an attorney.
