Auto Repair & Diagnostics : How to Diagnose a Cooling System Problem
Posted by admin on January 25, 2010
Problems with a car’s cooling system are usually indicated by a car that generates too much heat, a car that overheats or a car that runs cold all of the time. Check the thermostat and radiator if a car engine is overheating with help from an auto mechanic in this free video on car repair and diagnostics.

I had thermostat, sensors, water pump, timing belt and other small parts replace. The head gaskets are fine. But is still heating up that he water from the resevoir tank boils up and comes out. Help
A leaky head gasket …
A leaky head gasket can also be a reason for no heat inside the car. If your heater core is hot on both hoses and your internal heating controls are working correctly, it may be a blown head gasket that keeps it from heating properly.
I’m surprised that …
I’m surprised that he didn’t mention one of the major causes of overheating….A LEAKY HEAD GASKET. Often a very small leak in a head gasket will cause you to lose small amounts of coolant in the form of vapor. You may smell coolant after driving the car for a bit but you never see it leak. In many cases it just leaks to the outside and doesn’t show up in your oil.

spot on, ive had to replace 6 fan motors and relays within the last month…..i work at a jeep outfitters in texas
your heater core …
your heater core could be stopped up, preventing complete coolant flow….or your thermostat could be stuck in the closed position. if its not either of the two, you could have a damaged core in the radiator or the cap couldnt be sealing correctly.
He doesn’t mention …
He doesn’t mention it because the video, whilst starring the jeep, is not about jeeps specifically. Rather, it is a general instructional video which covers some of the basics which somebody could use to help them when trying to diagnose a cooling problem.
Give it a rest.
I have a 98 Olds …
I have a 98 Olds Cutlass with overheating. ASE mech has repaired leaky intake, replaced water pump, hoses, flushed radiator now recommends new radiator. whistling that accelerates as the engine is revved. I hear gurgling under the hood but sounds close to the dash when I start and stop; only little coolant lost around cap when it overheats (190 deg). I am female and sceptical of mechanics. Insight into your knowledge would be greatly appreciated. I have already spent $1200, but not fixed.

The most common …
The most common causes of overheat on a Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ (which is the one in the video) is a bad radiator fan relay and radiator fan motor.
Why doesn’t he mention that?
My car only …
My car only overheats on high temp days and only while driving at speed over 50KMH.
When car is idle, regardless of whether the AC is on, it wont overheat, as soon as you drive it on a hot day with AC on, the temp will rise to the redline.
What sounds most likely to cause this?
Cheers.

what could be the problem if the car is overheating and is getting about half of the gas economy it should be generating?
