at the shop i'm in we don't turn anyone away. if it's a ridiculous request like spray painting the brake calipers or whatever. explain things as well as possible so they can understand it may not be the right thing to do or may be a waste of money, you will build their trust even if it doesn't turn out the way the had hoped. we are the busiest and most successful shop im town, our customers know they won't get screwed and we will do whatever we can to help. good luck man
References :
Someone very wise once told me to always taylor a business towards wealthy people....because they can always afford it. Mechanical or body, your shop needs to produce the highest level of service/repair and absolute honesty. This alone will have people banging down the doors daily. I am in insurance claims and I am still amazed at the way some repair shops are always in disarray and chaos. No one can ever find parts, tools, paperwork etc. The office is a mess and the production floor is worse. This not only drives away customers but good techs as well. It's just not that much harder to keep a shop spotless and organized, (I have worked at both types). People today want a repairer that respects them and their $50,000.00 car. These same people are not usually interested in TV or radio ads and are certainly not interested in cruddy shops and cruddier workmen. Word of mouth will make or break an auto repair shop in a matter of months --try renting a spot at a local car show and set up a tent with your shop logo on the front. Give away free bottled water or something for about five hours and just hang out and answer questions and hand out business cards. You will be floored at the amount of inquires and discussions you will get into with the car people and visitors alike. Regular people are desperate for quality and honesty in this game and are willing to pay for it. One last piece of advice...remind local insurance agents/staff and claims adjusters that you are here to do an honest days work for a reasonable fee and will be glad to assist them if needed. I depend on some some shops to help me diagnois problems from time to time and I don't forget the ones that are honest and helpful.
References :
Get a great lookin website, good word of mouth, and advertise well. Keep it clean and organized. Be professional in everything u do. Run monthly/weekly specials and/or coupons to attract new customers, and give old ones a snazzy biz card. If all else fails, get some hot girls to prance around with thong bikinis and small tops!!
References :
go big man, depends on what kind of shop. if you are talking about custom work then put out some top notch jobs and get them in the public eye - some local papers have a weekly section with local rides in them. don't just do body work to them either, more power will get you more recognition then a few bolt on effects and a stupid wing on the back.
