What’s the difference between an auto mechanic and an engine machinist (or machinist in general)?

Posted by admin on February 8, 2012

I’m wondering what’s the difference between the two, since i work at an auto shop that’s both a mechanic shop and a machine shop and the machinist knows basic engine work. Is it the same or or are they two completely different things??

a machinist is a more specialized job than a mechanic.

An auto mechanic can diagnose engine problems and can fix the problem (or at least explain what needs to be done). A machinist takes engine parts and works on them. Re-boring cylinders, grinding valves, etc.
