How many years do you need of auto mechanics do you need to become a mechanic?

I want to do auto mechanics as my vocation for the last two years of my high school career. I heard somewhere that you need that AND two more years in a, auto mechanics school. Is that true? I thought that once you did vocational school, you were about ready for the job, except for maybe extra practice hours and a bit more training. Can you guys clear this up for me?

It’s not just a matter of time.

I’ve seen "mechanics" who have been at the job for years, and still do a craptastic job of it.

It’s like asking "how many years of school do you need to be educated?" There is no specified time limit, it’s a matter of how quickly you learn, and skill level.

  1. Thomas Diamond Said,

Ask a two year community college to advise you.

  4. Michael Campbell Said,

In South-Africa you don’t see alot of ladies doing Auto Mech. You are unique. I am currently doing Auto + Diesel Heavy equipment Mech. In SA it takes 5 years to qualify if you follow the NCV route and 3 years if you take the nearly phased out NATAL route. I am probably not of much help since I can’t inform you on American procedure. But One thing I can say is that you will always; always have job security and that the salary can be ridiculosuly high if you work for the right company; especially as a Diesel/Heavy equipment/earthmoving Mech. All the best to you for the right company; especially as a Diesel/Heavy equipment/earthmoving Mech. All the best to you
