How do I become an auto mechanic with no experience with cars?

Posted by admin on April 29, 2010

I know very little about cars but I am interested in knowing how to become a mechanic. I think it would be a good skill to have and a job as a mechanic would be useful and possibly fun. I’m 18 years old and I’m going to a university in Michigan with no idea what direction to go in.

I am not sure how they do it in the States, in Canada I had to find a auto repair place that was willing to hire me to take an apprenticeship. I served 9000 hours and went to trade school 6 months. I would look up your Ministry of Education to see what the protocol is. You are not going wrong by becoming a mechanic. I was never out of a job all the time I was in the trade. 30 years

You could probably start out doing lube jobs at quick lube or xpress lube. Maybe you can be a shop hand somewhere as well. Go to the local gas stations and apply. Be honest about your lack of experience and when you do get a job, work your behind off and pay attention. That will always help in the future when you get into a job that you really want.

Start reading car magazines, hot rod, etc.
Take some college courses, auto mechanics, math, science, esp, computer skills! Everything has more software than hardware nowdays.
Thats where math and computer skills are imperative.
Its a tough job, most places low pay, and long hours. You’ll be unappreciated, and often dirty.
Do something fun and more rewarding, like go to a fire academy, or police academy!
    Good luck!~Dan

Sign up for the automotive program at your college if there is one
they should teach you the basics and then the advanced things later.

Hey I see you go to U of M. I live in Ann Arbor and I know of a few local colleges that have very good auto programs. Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor has a very good auto program to become an ASE certified mechanic in any of the work categories that you can be certified for as an auto mechanic. They also have a body repair course too if you want to get into collision repair. They have a Auto restoration & fabrication course too. They have a very big and nice facility, you should get a tour sometime since its not far (by the st joe hospital) also there’s Jackson Community College that is very nice too but its a little further away (45 min).

I graduated from Washtenaw Community College and it was very nice and the instructors are very knowledgeable and helpful. I have been a mechanic for a few years but when I graduated i was prepared to be a mechanic.
