Use wood. I'm sure you will like wood. I will help you get splinters out. The auto paint is pretty pricey. If your interested in that wood , let me know.
References :
Yes but there is still prep work involved -

Sanding sealing
priming
sanding again
painting and clearcoat.

See if you can talk to the shop pwner and use some leftover paint.
Usually there are boxes of them all over the place, I know I have a ton of them.

It should be a pretty cheap part to paint, I would do it for about 40.00 - less if you put a show on for the guys.....
References :
16+ years auto customizing

Actually the paint would not wear very well. Try getting them powder-coated, or chrome plated. If you can afford it, see what it costs to get brass pipe instead. I won't be cheap, but it will look much better.
Good luck!
References :
Chances are that the paint won't be as permanent on a pole as it would be on a car. It's the applying process. If money is a problem, you can try spray-painting it yourself with a good paint, letting it dry and then spraying with a clear to make sure the paint doesn't come off. Nothing worst than sliding on it and having it decorate you.

Have fun!
References :
you don't need paint (unless you like a particular color). what you want is a clear coat (gloss). as the name implies its clear. And will allow a smooth surface like a New car. Just be careful all the daring should try stripper pole. Good Luck...

P.S.
You can get a can of clear coat at walmart - so any where, $ 4.00 a can give or take.
References :
You will probably end up spending more money at a body shop than it would be to get a steel pipe and have it brass plated
References :
That would be a good idea. the glossy paint that is used on vehicles would work nicely. for a pole about 9 feet tall and with a diameter of about 6 inches....it would probably cost about $50 so go for it. u would not get any kinda of burn because of the slickness and u would slide nicely. XD
References :
Why not just polish the pole. Put it in a lathe, and use steel wool. It should come out truly a nice finish.

You could make a poor man's lathe for this - plug one end with a wood dowel - then use an electric drill to spin it using a large diameter (say 1/2") drill bit. The other end can rest on a "V" notch in another piece of wood.

Just have to think a bit outside the box :-)
