An orbital sander is used to feather the edges on bondo repairs. That way you cannot tell where the repair was made after the car or panel was painted. The term orbital is miss leading. In reality is spins in a circle and also around a cam. This is also known as a DA sander which stands for dual action.
References :
Good question.

An orbital sander is used for fine finishing fiberglass patch or repairs or smoothing primer before applying paint. It is a lot like hand sanding, but is much faster. Sanding surface block vibrates in a small orbit (small circle) very rapidly.

A disc sander would not work for this application as it is designed to remove large amounts of paint, in short amount of time.
References :
the sanding disc on an orbital sand spins (orbital), and it can be used to remove rust or paint with a very fine grain of paper, but i wouldn't recommend using it for auto repair if you can avoid it.
References :
Can be used for polishing the car or for metal surface repairs. The motion of the sander is circular.
References :
An orbital sander has a small electric motor connected ot a round disc that rotates at semi high speeds, like as fast as fan spins. It helps you buff down metal and paint to help create a smooth clean surface without rust. you can buy from just about anywhere and youll need different grade sanding pads, that are like sandpaper, to go with it.
References :
An orbital sander, when used with the appropriate sandpaper, can be used to remove paint from the damaged area of the car. This allows you to have a smooth surface to prime and repaint after you have completed the repair.
